What's the first thing I need to do to get work as an extra?
In order to find jobs as an extra, you'll need to register with a casting company, preferably one that specializes in extras.

How do I register with a casting company?
You'll need to make an appointment, have a brief interview, and pay them a small fee (usually less than $25).

Do I need to get a headshot?
No. Some casting companies will try to convince you to get one, but their not necessary. A regular picture of you will do just fine.

Do I need special clothes?
It's best to have as large and varied a wardrobe as possible. Roles may call for dress from a certain period, and you won't be able to get them unless you have appropriate attire.

Who will be my supervisor on the set?
The assistant director, or A.D.

How do I become a member of the Screen Actors' Guild (SAG)?
Either by saying a line or by getting three SAG vouchers.

Why does it matter whether or not I'm in the SAG?
Extras who are in the SAG get paid more, but non-union extras will find it easier to get work.

How will I need to behave on the set?
The most important thing is that you not get in anyone's way and stay silent while the cameras are running. In order to stay quiet, you'll need some reading material and perhaps a walkman.

Can I talk with the actors?
No; you'll probably get fired if you speak before you're spoken to.

What happens if I don't show up for a scheduled shoot?
This is to be avoided at all costs because you'll probably lose your registration with your casting company.
